Mettis Aerospace recognised in National Engineering Education Award
June 2011

METTIS Aerospace has been recognised in a national award for their valuable contribution to Engineering Education.
Working in conjunction with South Bromsgrove Community High School, employees from Mettis Aerospace have spent the past year collaborating through the local Engineering Education Scheme (EES) as part of a regional event to encourage interest in engineering.
Engineers from Mettis, Steve Green and Amit Shinh, worked closely with the students to devise a project which included both design and manufacture modules. The mentors from Mettis Aerospace visited the school weekly to provide support and training, which included everything from time management and planning, to technical drawings and machining operations.
The project scope was set by the Mettis mentors and included the design and build of a measurement fixture to determine the thickness of hot aluminum forgings. Students were encouraged to understand all essential principles of the forging process and material properties of the forging and measuring equipment.
As part of the EES project, all 52 schools were asked to present their engineering project to a judging panel at a regional day in Cranmore Park, Solihull. The students gave an excellent presentation and landed first place in their segment.
Speaking of the recent award, Director Lawrence Jenkins said "This is Mettis' first involvement in the Engineering Education Scheme and we are delighted to be recognised in this national award. It has been a very rewarding process for both sides, and Mettis hope to continue this integration with local schools in years to come"
The award was presented to Mettis Aerospace by EDT which is a leading national provider of work related learning programmes targeting 18-21 year olds, and annually involving nearly 6000 students.
