On Friday 14th December Redditch based Mettis Aerospace presented local student Charlotte Vassell with the Business Enterprise Award for her outstanding achievements in business studies at Trinity High School. The award is presented annually to the student who displays the most aptitude in a business related activity. As part of her business studies course, Charlotte took part in the national award for enterprise competition and was appointed Managing Director of company La Monde de Bijou. La Monde de Bijou comprised of ten directors, all of whom had their own areas of responsibility. The team from Trinity High School had to identify the products that they would sell, how they would sell them and then create a company report which was submitted to the judges of the competition. The company initially offered jewellery for sale however the company then diversified to offer gift hampers. These hampers were tailored for men, women and children. The directors of La Monde de Bijou decided to sell their products at a trade fair held in Redditch just before Valentines Day and worked really hard to get all of the gifts ready so they could capitalise on customers buying gifts for Valentines Day.
The company was successful and was short listed to compete at the regional finals of the award for enterprise competition. The regional finals were held at the Artrix centre in Bromsgrove in April. Charlotte and three of her fellow directors had to give a speech at the event in front of an audience of approximately 200 people. Unfortunately La Monde de Bijou was not selected to go forward to the national final. It was however a hugely successful project for Charlotte and her team as the school had never before reached the regional finals.
Charlotte was nominated for the Mettis Aerospace Business Enterprise Award by teachers at Trinity High School. They felt that Charlotte had demonstrated good leadership skills and had worked hard to create a strong team environment. Charlotte was delighted to be presented with the award and said, “I thoroughly enjoyed leading La Monde de Bijou. It was challenging, especially when dealing with motivational issues, but I gained so much from the experience. I really felt that I had an insight into how business works and the pressures that leaders face.”
Mettis Aerospace was delighted to present Charlotte with the award. Ray Bennett, Personnel Manager at the company said, “It is a pleasure to present this award to such an enthusiastic and outgoing student. It is even more special as we now know that three generations of Charlotte’s family have been employed by Mettis Aerospace.” Ray went on to say, “We wish Charlotte every success with her future plans and hope that she is as successful in her university career as she has been at Trinity High School.”
Mettis Aerospace has close relationships with the local community and the Business Enterprise Award is another example of how the company works to strengthen its ties with local schools. Mettis Aerospace takes its responsibility as a major employer in Redditch very seriously and hopes that activities such as the Business Enterprise Award highlight to local students the career opportunities that exist within the organisation.
